Transforming the Passenger Experience Across Hong Kong with Dynamic In-Bus Displays

Kowloon Motor Bus Company (KMB) is one of South East Asia's largest road transport providers, serving 2.75 million daily passengers across Hong Kong with a fleet of approximately 4,000 buses. To modernize its passenger communications and deliver live, connected transit data in a region with 97.5% mobile internet adoption, KMB partnered with Navaho Technologies to engineer custom Passenger Information Display Systems (PIDS) for its iconic double-decker bus fleet.

The challenge

Traditional LED scrolling text signs offered limited visual engagement, lacked multi-language flexibility, and could not dynamically display complex route information. KMB required an advanced digital LCD screen system capable of:

  1. Displaying real-time, bilingual (Mandarin and English) route and stop details without relying on passenger mobile data.
  2. Operating reliably under extreme temperatures (up to 50°C) and harsh transit vibrations.
  3. Giving bus drivers seamless manual override control during unexpected route adjustments.

The approach

Navaho designed a high-specification internal and external digital display architecture tailored to KMB's fleet:

  1. Internal multi-screen setup: each bus features four high-brightness LCD displays (two 16:9 widescreen panels and two half-height panels) showing "This Stop" / "Next Stop" predictions, partial route ladders, driver alerts, safety messaging, and alight reminders.
  2. Multilingual driver control panel: an intuitive, touchscreen interface allows drivers to monitor internal displays, set service types, and manually advance or modify stops in both Mandarin and English.
  3. Sunlight-readable external destination displays: innovative front, back, and side external LCD displays replaced LED destination signs. Featuring proprietary thermal management systems, these screens withstand temperatures up to 50°C while supporting full-motion video and dynamic graphics.
  4. Proprietary fleet integration: the solution integrates into KMB's on-board route management platform, pulling live data automatically while allowing over-the-air remote management and system updates.

The result

  1. Enhanced passenger convenience: enabled commuters (43% traveling for leisure) to easily track route progress at a glance without relying on mobile connectivity.
  2. Rugged industrial performance: successfully passed rigorous EMC, vibration, power draw, and thermal durability testing.
  3. Stronger brand presence: customized LCD layouts utilizing KMB's signature typography and brand colors provided a clean, high-tech customer experience.
