Network Services History
Navaho's first product was a proxy server written for the Acorn RISC OS
platform. This was originally started in 1995 to enable three students to share
a single modem in their house.
The Navaho Proxy was released as shareware and interest from schools
quickly grew, as at the time, Acorn's RISC OS was the most common platform
found in schools. The proxy was quickly developed to include first filtering
and then reporting tools. Basic SMTP/POP/IMAP email services were also added,
at which point it was called the Navaho Internet Server Suite.
With the server suite handling both web and email, it was a simple step to
create one of the first web based email systems. This web based system was
expanded to include news, calendaring, address books and many other useful features.
This expertise in creating web based systems proved invaluable when the Server
Suite was ported from RISC OS, first onto the NetBSD platform, and shortly after
onto Linux. To make the system easy to manage, all major functions on the suite
were controlled via the web interface.
In 1999, Navaho Technologies Ltd was formed and we focused on building Internet
filtering server appliances which could be completely managed via a simple web interface.
The server suite was renamed TeamCAT and made its original appearance on the Cobalt
range of hardware.
In 2002 with the sale of Cobalt to Sun Microsystems, and its eventual closure, Navaho
launched its own range of hardware, the Galium platform. TeamCAT by this time
had been developed to include full groupware features, including Windows server
synchronisation, plus an internal firewall and VPN system.
Demand for more comprehensive features in the TeamCAT Firewall lead to the development
and release of our RIFT firewall appliance. With 3 network ports and the same easy to
use interface as the TeamCAT, it was an instant success and was deployed in over 40 countries
around the world.
In 2006 it became apparent that many customers were turning to our support team every
time they wanted to change firewall rules on the RIFT firewalls. To fill this requirement,
we launched the FireCAT, a high performance, fully managed firewall solution available with 4, 8 or 12 network ports.
With FireCAT all firewall and network configuration changes are made by our highly trained support team with customers able to view their existing rules via our support site. Our support team also assist customers with network troubleshooting and dealing with complex network issues such as VPN fail-over, VLANing and Disaster Recovery.
In 2009, several new more powerful models of the FireCAT were released, including the Pro version with 24 network ports. 2010 will see a new release of the FireCAT operating system and new features added to the support site to assist customers with managing their networks.
